As Christmas quickly approaches and brightly coloured decor fills the shelves in every high street store I think it’s time I took a look at this year’s selection of advent calendars. My pick of the crop will include a little something for everyone and for all budgets.
Christmas Advent Calendars 2017
Ahhh. The annual countdown to Christmas tradition of opening up little doors to see what is behind them is almost here. As a kid we had the more traditional picture behind the door calendars until the confectionary industry got their sticky hands on them. I remember one year having a Mars one, I was stupidly excited about getting a full sized Mars bar on Christmas Day; even though we received a sickening amount of chocolate anyway.
Advent calendars have certainly evolved through the years and now contain almost anything. I’ve decided to hit Amazon and some of my other favourite stores to see what they’re bringing you this year.
Food Advent Calendars
Surely the best kind of advent calendar is one filled with food? I’ve gone hunting for more than just the cheap-ass ones you can grab in the Poundshop including one that is perfect for those avoiding dairy.
This Haribo advent calendar is great for anyone who isn’t particularly fond of the chocolate ones. Kids and grownups will love this so from the happy world of Haribo, especially for £7.
Rather than having a huge list of different chocolate advent calendars I thought I’d pick one that could be suitable for almost all chocolate lovers. This calendar from Moo Free is vegan as well as being soya-free and gluten-free; great for anyone who doesn’t get on too well with dairy or, like me, is vegan. This calendar is £6.94 on Amazon with Prime.
This might be a strange one to list, well stranger than the others, but I love the idea of this Jam and Marmalade calendar. It gives you something new to put on your toast or in your porridge each morning on the run up to Christmas. It is £9.99 with Prime delivery included; go on, bring out your inner Paddington Bear.
Alcoholic Advent Calendars
Tis the season to get rather tipsy, fa la la la la la la la la! Here are a couple of adult advent calendars that will help you unwind after a long day of Christmas shopping and present wrapping.
If you love sampling a range of craft beers then this advent calendar filled with full-size bottles of beers and lagers. It is £69.99 with Prime delivery but that makes it less than £3 a bottle. Drink each on as you open it or save them all for a very festive Christmas, it’s up to you.
This calendar is just perfect for any gin loving person. Each day you open your door to find a delicious dram of gin from award-winning independent bottler That Boutique-y Gin Company. It might come in at a rather pricey £99.95 but can you really put a price on good gin?
Alternatively, you could just buy a few bottles of your favourite plonk and try to restrict yourself to just one glass a night on the run up to Christmas.
Beauty Advent Calendars
It wouldn’t be an advent calendar roundup without the inclusion of some of the highly anticipated beauty calendars. I recently went to the Boots Christmas launch where I got to see a lot of the upcoming advent calendars, one of which I’ve included below.
Coming in at a whopping £125, The Beauty Countdown advent calendar gives you 25 days of glorious, cruelty-free beauty products from a range of companies such as Smashbox, Bobbi Brown and MAC. You need to be quick though, this advent calendar which was launched on the 24th October has only 1000 of them for sale. Let me know if you managed to grab one.
I’ve actually had the pleasure of viewing this glorious advent calendar in its full glory. If you love No7 make up then you’ll love this. Priced at a very reasonable £40 you get £169’s worth of No7 makeup and skincare with the added bonus of free click and collect. This one is also while stocks last.
If you’re a lover of all things smelly and bath-related then this advent calendar from Bomb Cosmetics might be what you’re looking for. It comes in pink or blue for £15.97 each or you have the option to buy both for £31.94. You get 24, gorgeous vegan-friendly bath treats to soak away all of that festive stress – I think this might be my personal favourite.
Toy Advent Calendars
If you’re a little health conscious when it comes to the amount of crap you’re kids are going to be eating between Halloween and New Years then opting for a toy based advent calendar might just put your mind to rest. Here are a few you might want to consider.
Who doesn’t love the Minions? Their adorable, banana-loving, yellow faces are everywhere – including advent calendars. This one from Mega Bloks gives them a full scene to build over the Christmas countdown and isn’t badly priced at £11.89 on Amazon with Prime.
I personally love this one from Crayola. 24 days of good, clean-ish, creative fun. This advent calendar is packed with craft projects, homemade gifts, finger puppets, and colouring activities. It’s £19.15 over on Amazon with Prime included and almost guaranteed to keep your kids occupied waiting for Santa.
Go on, throw abuse at me! Who in their right mind would suggest at Play-Doh advent calendar? Yup, me! I personally hate the stuff but it’s Christmas and if the kids can have an excuse to ruin the carpets but once a year then surely Christmas is that time of year? Priced at £16.74, these little pots of carpet ruining awesomeness will indeed make their day – just make sure you buy yourself the gin calendar above.
So there we have it. This is my roundup of advent calendars for 2017 that aren’t quite boring and will keep you and/or the kids occupied for the run-up to the fat man visiting. Enjoy.
